Drift Diver

Do you want to learn to fly underwater? Go with the flow and let the water carry you along? Then the SSI Drift Diver course is the one for you!

The SSI Drift Diver course teaches you how to enjoy going with the flow as you scuba dive down rivers and use ocean currents to glide along. It feels like flying – except that you’re underwater using scuba equipment. Drift diving can be relaxing and exhilarating at the same time.

During this course you will look at drift diving equipment - including floats, lines and reels, analyse the cause and effects of aquatic currents and what techniques are needed to ensure you stay close to your buddy during a drift dive. You will also get the opportunity to practice good buoyancy control, navigation and communication required during a drift dive. 

Included in the course is the SSI Drift Diver Manual and the SSI certification fee!

The SSI Drift Diver course consists two main sessions:

• Theory: - To be completed online prior to the course starting. 

• There is a bit of reading that will need to be completed prior to starting so please make sure you come in to collect your manual. 

• Diving: -  The SSI Drift Diver course consists of two open water dives. The dive site itself is chosen based on conditions on the day, however your instructor will discuss options for this including trips to Taupo, Poor Knights and Bay of Islands.

• ​Our Instructors are awesome - Here at Performance Diver we only teach SSI courses, and all of our SSI Instructors are here for one reason - they love diving! Sharing the underwater world with you is such an amazing experience and we're privileged to be able to do just that.

• If you’re a SSI (Junior) Open Water Diver who is at least 12 years old, you can enroll in the Drift Diver specialty course! Parental consent is required for students aged 12 - 17 years of age.

• Complete the Dive Medical form. Click here to print the SSI Medical Form for diving. If you answer YES to any of the medical questions you must complete a Dive Medical check with your Doctor and obtain written medical clearance before the start of the course as we can't allow you in the water without it. 

• As well as basic dive equipment (which can be rented) you are required to have a safety sausage, compass and knife.

• You will have homework to compete before the course starts. The course is heaps of fun, but is also intense - we have a lot to learn in our sessions, and they run to a very strict timetable. Failure to complete your homework means that you are behind right from the start, and are holding your group back. This is, understandably, not fair on everyone else and is likely to result in you being removed from the course without refund!
