Although most scuba dives are made with a buddy, an experienced diver may want or need to make dives without a partner. During the Self-Reliant Diver course, you learn about potential risks of diving alone and the value of equipment redundancy and necessary back-up gear.
There are two good reasons for you to take the self reliant diver course:
To develop your skills of planning and carrying out dives without a dive buddy, either when preferred or necessary
To sharpen your skills of self reliant diving, making you a stronger dive buddy or team member! The course will cover when diving alone might be applicable and the need to prepare and compensate for these situations.
Here at Performance Diver we feel it's really important to go 'above and beyond' with the Self Reliant Diver, so we give you a dedicated session in the pool to get used to the additional gear before we head into open water.

The PADI Self Reliant course consists of three main sections:
Theory - Over one evening you will complete the theory section at our Takapuna store. There is some homework for you to complete before these sessions, so make sure you collect your books / register your digital learning code with plenty of time!
Pool - On a second midweek evening, you'll join your Instructor at the Newmarket Olympic pool to try out the additional gear in a comfortable, controlled environment.
Diving - The PADI Self Reliant Diver course consists of 3 Open Water dives with your Instructor. You'll practice the skills needed to manage your dives without a buddy, including dive planning and redundant gas source usage.
Why learn with Performance Diver?
This is a very important question! There are many dive schools out there, so why would you choose ours?
We have nice small class sizes to prioritise your learning, with an absolute maximum of 4 students on Self Reliant Diver courses, however the Open Water dives are conducted at a maximum of 2 students per Instructor! This means that you get more personalised instructor time.
We're always going diving! Once you're qualified, we have heaps of shore dives, day trips, weekend adventures and more at every level of qualification! Every weekend throughout the season there are trips planned, so you're never short of options. Our social nights are a great way to make new dive buddies and new friends.
As a Performance Diver student you get exclusive offers and pricing on a huge range of dive gear. If you're not ready to commit to buying your own then no worries - we have heaps of rental gear at a great rate for you. We want you to go diving, so we'll make it as accessible as we can!
Our Instructors are awesome - Here at Performance Diver we only teach PADI courses, and all of our PADI Instructors are here for one reason - they love diving! Sharing the underwater world with you is such an amazing experience and we're privileged to be able to do just that.
Already be a certified PADI Advanced Open Water diver or equivalent.
Have at least 100 logged dives, and be able to produce evidence of this.
Complete the Dive Medical form. Click here to print the PADI Medical Form for diving. If you answer yes to any of the medical questions you must complete a Dive Medical check with your Doctor and obtain written medical clearance before the start of the course as we can't allow you in the water without it.
Students must be at least 18 years of age.
Under PADI standards as well as basic dive equipment you are required to have a redundant source of gas such as a pony cylinder (supplied) or twinset, SMB or DSMB with at least 30m of attached line, redundant depth gauge & timer / computer, compass, slate, back-up mask and knife. These can all be rented if you don't have your own.
You will have homework to compete before the course starts. The course is heaps of fun, but is also intense - we have a lot to learn in our sessions, and they run to a very strict timetable. Failure to complete your homework means that you are behind right from the start, and are holding your group back. This is, understandably, not fair on everyone else and is likely to result in you being removed from the course without refund!
